The sixth annual Legacy Day celebration will take place in Chestertown, Kent County, during the weekend of August 17. Legacy Day is sponsored jointly by Sumner Hall and the Historical Society of Kent County.
The full name of Sumner Hall is Post 25 of the Grand Army of the Republic. It was founded in 1882 by 28 veterans of the U.S.A. Colored Troops who fought for the Union. In fact, almost 500 Kent County African American men fought for the Union. In the early years the men met at local halls and churches, but the current building was constructed in 1908. For many years it was abandoned and derelict, until it was restored and reopened to the public in June 2014. It operates today as a museum, entertainment, and education space primarily devoted to African American history and culture, but it welcomes all members of the community to a variety of programs and activities throughout the year.
Legacy Day is dedicated to the celebration of the contributions of African Americans to Kent County’s history. Each year an exhibit on some aspect of that rich cultural tradition is mounted in the Bordley History Center by the Historical Society of Kent County. In 2014 the exhibit focused on the Uptown Club and its owner Charlie Graves, who brought top Black musicians to town during the mid-20th century. In subsequent years, the focus has been on local musicians and clubs, African American businesses, and education and teachers during segregation from 1872 until 1967. This year the exhibit will focus on Kent County’s historic African American churches that were founded more than 100 years ago. There are 24 churches that will be illustrated in the exhibit, and 16 of them are still active. The lead researcher for the exhibit is Bill Leary, a member of the board of Sumner Hall. The exhibit in the Bordley History Center will be open from 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM on August 17, but can be viewed at other times during the regular hours of the Center.
Several streets in downtown Chestertown will be closed to traffic during the late afternoon and evening of Saturday, August 17 to make way for a parade at 5:00 PM, followed closely by live music and dancing on High Street provided by Jasper Hackett with Quiet Fire. The evening’s events will include a dance contest. The classic cars that participate in the parade will be displayed on Park Row during the evening. Food and drink will be provided by a number of vendors along the streets and in Fountain Park. Several nonprofit organizations will have displays in the park. Some tables and chairs will be available for attendees, but visitors are encouraged to bring their own chairs if possible.
Other events surrounding Legacy Day include an Old Time Gospel Concert and Reception at Bethel A.M.E. church at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 10 and a Genealogy Workshop on Saturday, August 17 from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM at the Kent County Public Library in Chestertown. A light lunch will be available at that event. At Sumner Hall on August l7 from 11:00 AM until 4:00 PM there will be Stories and Snacks for the Young and Young at Heart. At 2:00 PM on the 17th there will be a Gospel Concert by the Rev. Dr. Anthony Brown. at Bethel A.M.E. Church.
